If you are working in this role, and are eligible, you can apply for residence after working in New Zealand for 2 years. You must earn at least NZD $35.00 an hour (the 2025 median wage) when you apply for a resident visa.

For 24 out of the 30 months before you apply, you must have been paid at least the median wage. You can use the median wage rate in place at the start of your 24 months — this may be different to the current median wage. You may need to meet a different median wage rate if you change job or your pay decreases. At the time you apply for residence you must: • hold a NZ Certificate Level 3, or a higher qualification, which includes the knowledge and credit requirements of the New Zealand Certificate in Prisoner Management Level 3, or the NZ Certificate in Offender Management (NZCOM) Level 3.
